ALL IRELAND HISTORY ESSAY WINNERS 2016
Mrs. Fleming founded the original squad three years ago. This year, volunteers from sixth class wrote an essay stating their interest in history, what talent they could bring to the squad and why they should be considered acceptable. Ten boys qualified. We then voted for the Captain (Michael Grant) and Vice Captain (Ciarán Keane).
We discovered the name Hubert M. O’Connor from a witness statement from the Bureau of Military History-1913-1921. Our detective work started! Shane’s Gran got us copies of the Celbridge 1901-1911 census. We learned where he lived in Celbridge, who was living his house and his status.
On February 4th the History Squad took a trip to Clongowes College, Clane where we met Mrs.Doyle- History Archivist. She told us Hubert was liked, sporty, intelligent, and spent 6 years there. The motto of the Jesuit’s is: ‘A Man for Others.’ This became the title of our essay. Our aim was to prove by research; reading books, reports and searching the net that Hubert M. O’ Conner was truly a man for others.
Last week, U.C.C. rang the school and Professor Rory O’Dwyer informed Mrs. Fleming that Scoil Na Mainistreach History Squad had won the All Ireland Centenary Essay in the WW1 category. We have to travel to the University in Cork on Tuesday, 10th of May to accept our award at a presentation ceremony. We are looking forward to this and as Robert Curran said at out last meeting, “We are glad out hard work paid off”.
Michael Grant, Ciarán Keane, Shane Walsh, Eavan O’Keeffe, Robert Curran, James Lee, Adam Skidmore, Thomas Gannon, C.J. Page and Sean Kerrigan.

Reveille
Hello everyone!
John and Eimhin here from the Scoil Na Mainistreach 2015 History Squad. Just letting you know that our History Squad’s essay on The Belgian Refugees of 1915 has recently been published in a magazine called “Reveille”. This is Irelands’s first Military History Magazine. The editor’s name is Wesley Bourke from Celbridge. He comes to our school every year to do “living history” with the 6th class boys. To anybody that is interested the magazine normally retails at the price of €7.50 but the editor is making a reduction for anyone in Scoil Na Mainistreach that would like to buy the magazine to €5.00.
If interested please contact MS.Fleming
